Operation Cold Start happens this week with RCMP

As temperatures drop and snow continues to fall, the Alberta RCMP is launching Operation Cold Start from February 1 to 7, 2026. This initiative aims to reduce the theft of idling vehicles during the winter months.

During this week-long campaign, officers will check unattended, idling vehicles to ensure they are properly secured and that keys are not left inside. They will also educate the public on vehicle safety measures. Vehicle theft not only affects owners but also impacts the broader community by increasing insurance costs and facilitating further crimes.

To protect your vehicle, the RCMP recommends:

– Parking in visible, well-lit areas if a garage or driveway isn’t available.
– Using visible anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks.
– Understanding your vehicle’s security settings, especially if it has a push-start system.
– Never leaving your vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
– Always locking your vehicle’s doors, even in a driveway or garage.
– Avoiding leaving valuables in your vehicle.
– Staying with your vehicle if it needs to warm up, as most modern engines don’t require a warm-up period.

S/Sgt. Luke Halvorson of the Alberta RCMP Community Safety and Well-being Unit emphasizes, “Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm can be convenient for thieves looking to steal transportation to commit additional crimes.” Operation Cold Start aims to reduce auto theft by educating Albertans on steps they can take to help keep their vehicle safe.

By following these guidelines, Albertans can help prevent vehicle theft and contribute to community safety.
